I don't think this is one of my best just because caves are so difficult to photograph because they require artificial light. I just wanted to share it because this place is so fascinating. This a a section of the Ape Caves in Mt St Helens national volcanic monument in Washington state. This is the longest known lava tube in North America. This was a fun hike which requires a flash light as it is a 2 mile hike in pitch black from the entrance to the exit. I would really like to go back sometime with some lanterns to light the place up better and take more photos.

Not that I know of but I didn't get that close to the mountain itself. there were several spots in the caves here where it had caved in a little bit. I'm not sure if it was from the eruption in 1980 or if it had been caved in before that. The caves are actually relatively new as far as caves go, they were formed about 2000 years ago.

Interesting story behind the naming of these caves, going way back to the earliest days of explorer-Sasquatch encounters.
On a side note, I've always been very interested in volcanism, something I don't get to see a lot of here on the East Coast, so I'd love an opportunity to explore and photograph a lava tube, near a still-very-active volcano.

The name was actually derived from the first explorers a the cave. The first people to extensively explore it was a man and his sons who were members of a local boy scout troop called "The Mt. St Helens Apes". I guess in some way it was related though because they had named themselves that because of their interest in the legends of sasquatch in the Mt St Helens area.

Is there a real person standing? It seems so... transparent oO
My first thought was that you captured a ghost with shorts and backpack^^

Yeah that is a person, long shutter speeds can have a ghosting effect when people are in the shot for a part of the exposure but not the whole time. This was a 30 second exposure.
