I've been kind of into converting my files to black and white lately. Not sure if this one works better than the color version or not. What do you think? The original can be seen here [link]

Trully a wonderful shot! Perfect framing! And it's really great in black and white!

It doesn't work. Black and white is all about contrast between the perfect white and the darkest black in the shot. This photo has waaaaaaay too many mid-tones to work in black and white. Perhaps infrared - I'd like a nice black sky behind the rock and soft white foliage because it would be lovely contrast.

Black and white photography is way more complex than people realise - I'm not saying this to be patronising! You're an excellent colour photographer. Your shots lack the composition and balance of contrast needed to be stunning black and whites. I firmly believe you can't just go out and shoot something and decide later if you want it black and white or colour - film forced the choice to a certain extent and I'd recommend shooting a few black and white rolls of film as an experiment for you if you're interested in doing more black and white work.

bw is dangerous to the non-artist
but absolute to the veteran

it works great in both color and bw
i would pick the late but damn a good sot as it is

Thanks. I think I like the B&W version also. Its difficult to get the hang of but I think I'm starting to get B&W down. It often times doesn't work just converting a color to B&W, it takes a lot of burning and dodging and selectively applying contrast.

ya, doing it on the cam itself is a lot better. But then you would want to take 2 shots. One color, one BW.

Just gives more props to the guys like Ansel Adams

Ansel Adams may have actually done more work post processing (in the darkroom) than he did in the field with the camera. He extensively burned and dodged his images in the darkroom to extend the dynamic range to the maximum extent capable with film.

Which is frieghtening considering the BW images
lack of ability to change much (due to shadows and highlights)
and lack of "EDIT UNDO" buttons
haha.

i rly like this shot! when it comes to color vs. b&w, i would prob. pick b&w. I really like the tone and mood that the shot gives, whereas the color makes me feel like its an ordinary day with clouds, the b&w feels more exotic, and as if u caught the moment perfectly. i do like the contrast, anymore could take a way from the shot. like u said, theirs a fine line.
great shot!
